Born in Miami Beach, Florida, William J. Blechman earned his B.A., with honors, from Harvard College, and his J.D., with honors, from the University of Miami School of Law where he served as an editor on the Law Review. Following law school, Mr. Blechman clerked for the Honorable Jose A. Gonzalez, Jr., United States District Judge for the Southern District of Florida. Mr. Blechman is a member of the Bar of the States of Florida, Tennessee and the District of Columbia. He is also admitted to practice in the United States Supreme Court, and several U.S. Courts of Appeals and District Courts.
Mr. Blechman's practice concentrates on antitrust law, with an emphasis on the specific client interests of large public and private companies, entrepreneurial individuals and public agencies rather than class actions or mass actions. Over the years, he has been involved in the civil prosecution of many international antitrust cartels, including conspiracies involving citric acid, rubber processing chemicals, parcel tankers, vitamins, ferroalloys, monosodium glutamate, cabotage, chocolate confectionary products, epdm, nucleotides, graphite electrodes, hydrogen peroxide, persalts, styrene butadiene rubber, polychloroprene and sorbates to name some of them. As part of his work, Mr. Blechman assists multinational corporations in formulating and implementing measured and principled strategies to maximize recoveries in connection with global cartel claims. Mr. Blechman’s cartel practice spans the U.S. and Europe and involves him in proceedings incident to enforcement actions by the U.S. Department of Justice and the European Commission. Mr. Blechman helped write the ABA Antitrust Section’s Response to the European Commission’s “Green Paper: Damages Actions For Breach of EC Antitrust Rules.”
Mr. Blechman has prosecuted or defended antitrust cases involving domestic conspiracy or monopolization claims in such industries as electronic payments and financial services, telecommunications, corrugated paper, airlines, shipping, construction and pharmaceuticals.
Besides his conventional antitrust practice, Mr. Blechman has been retained by the Attorneys General of several States to provide advice or to prosecute bid rigging conspiracies involving such industries as dairy, road building, and transportation.
Representative Antitrust Cases: General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Company and Chrysler Corporation v. Elkem Metals Co. etc. (W.D. Pa.); Unilever United States, Inc. v. Daicel Ltd. (N.D. While antitrust work dominates his practice, Mr. Blechman also has experience representing plaintiffs and defendants in other complex commercial litigation. Further, he has a niche representing clients in connection with claims brought under the False Claims Act. Such cases place a premium on coordination with various State and Federal law enforcement agencies with jurisdiction over the subject matter of the particular claim. Mr. Blechman has represented claimants in False Claims Act cases in such industries as military, defense, health care, education and labor.
Mr. Blechman has tried cases for plaintiffs and defendants in State and Federal Court, he has taught pretrial procedure and practice at the University of Miami School of Law, he has lectured and published papers on antitrust law, he has taught seminars on various other topics in the law, and his writings have been published in law reviews, legal textbooks, business newspapers and other periodicals.
